Geri's bison features many famous paintings by Vincent Van Gogh.

I grew up in Fargo, North Dakota and graduated from Concordia College. I decided to major in art my freshman year. I went on to graduate school and got my Masters degree at the University of Iowa, and my Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati. Besides oil painting, I did printmaking and ceramics. I now have a painting studio in a carriage house and do mostly landscapes and portraits. My work is exhibited widely, and I also have had three one-man shows at the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead. Last summer I had a one-man show in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
In the last several years my work has tended towards realistic depictions of nature. I try to make my images imitate the mood or atmosphere that I saw or felt when seeing my subject matter. The use of light is a very important element in my paintings.
The minute I heard about the “Herd on the Prairie” project I was interested. The concept of Fargo having “Bison” painted by local artists was “so fun.” It has generated a lot of enthusiasm among the public and artists. The idea of “Gogh- Bison-Go” came to me very quickly once I decided to paint a daytime landscape on one side and a nighttime scene on the other side. I thought immediately about “Starry Night” by Van Gogh and then used his name as a pun referencing our local Bison team. Using Van Gogh was interesting to me also because I could incorporate both his face (from his many self-portraits), and the use of his varied textures in the paint strokes. A “big plus” for me was making the fiberglass bloodied band aid for the ear that Van Gogh cut!
