••••• The inspiration for Chinwongs bison is from a trip to Yellowstone National Park where she saw the mighty bison.••••• Wanpen Chinwongs was born in Bangkok, Thailand where she earned her BFA in painting, sculpture, and printmaking from Silpakorn University. She then immigrated to the United States to continue her education earning a MA in sculpture from Moorhead State University in 1988. Wanpen has since had her art presented at exhibitions in Thailand, the United States, and Germany. She is now currently working with colored pencils and printmaking techniques, concentrating on representations of animals, plants, and other wildlife. I have always been interested in using the bison as a subject matter for my work. Its imposing size, shaggy appearance, and its almost mystical connection to the Great Plains makes it one the most intriguing area icons. However, I could never decide what medium to utilize in order to realize the bison artistically. After an artist friend informed me about the project “Herd about the Prairie,” I knew it would be the perfect opportunity for me to finally work with the bison as a subject matter. The project was very challenging because there were so many facets to consider – the bison itself, what it symbolized, and how best to represent this symbolism. I decided on a “kaleidoscope” of many elements where the many facets of the prairie (the grasslands, the badlands, the wildlife, and the diverse peoples which inhabit it) would be incorporated with a symbolic reddish hue that recalls the sun shining over the Great Plains.
