••••• William used pictographs from several historical periods of the Native Americans on his bison. As well, you will prominently see on both sides of the bison a lightening strike in the shape of a heart and the sides of the buffalo nickel.••••• I was born in Iowa and lived there until graduating from high school. I eventually moved to North Dakota in 1970. I have lived in Fargo since 1976. I have been a member of Gallery4, Ltd since 1993. I have had very little formal art education, taking an occasional art class and studying art instruction books. My media are watercolor and photography. I also have done oil, pencil, pen & ink, and charcoal. I mostly paint and photograph landscapes, but on occasion other subject matter. I draw my inspiration from the Northern Plains, from the lakes of Minnesota to the mountains of Montana. I'm drawn to the open spaces of the prairie and the solitude of the badlands:"Where your spirit rides the wind" For sometime I had hoped a project like this would happen in Fargo, but had no idea how this would happen. I first heard about this while attending a meeting of the Red River Attraction Association. Heart of the Prairie is a phrase I have used for sometime. To me the Bison is the heart of the prairie. I painted him white for the "Sacred White Buffalo." On the shoulders are lightning bolts in the shape of the heart. On the head and flanks I painted images that were done by Native Americans. On the each side of the hind quarters are the sides of the Indian Head Nickel. Also painted on one side is a cow and calf and the other a bull. |
