••••• Hans' "Beach Buff" was the first bison completed for the Herd About the Prairie Project.••••• After seven years creating sets and special effect costumes for motion pictures and completing a series of life-size sculptures for the blind at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, I graduated from the school of hard knocks. The following two years, as chief sculptor for a museum supplier in Minneapolis, I created realistic pieces ranging from full-size dinosaurs and whales to new born Wallabies for museums, parks, and zoos across the country. In 1997, I went solo, and continued to sculpt for galleries and on many commissioned works. In 1999, my family and I moved to the north shore of Lake Sallie in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and built Gilly Studios. First commissions to follow included a twenty five foot mural for the heritage wall and an eight foot by fifteen foot sculpted donor tree at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in D.L.. I also sculpted a series of reptiles currently on a ten year world tour through the St. Paul Science Museum. In the fall of 2002, I co-founded an all-volunteer committee to work on a public art project called ‘Sunny in DL’ (similar to the ‘Cows of Chicago’). I donated the original sunfish sculpture and mold and lead the project through its unveiling in the spring of 2003. The result was 50 giant sunfish sculptures on display in Detroit Lakes and over $45,000 raised for public art. My recent work under Gilly Art involves the designing and development of the Village of Laffalot and the character Alfunz at the Meritcare Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Clinics in Fargo, ND. The theme is based on the characters and style of a children’s book I have written and am illustrating in my “spare time.”
