Bison Pull Toy

Bison Pull Toy

•••••

Juliet's bison was inspired by antique pull-toys.

Juliet Hanratty: I am a graduate of MSUM with a degree in Art. I work in sculpture, collage and painting. I have a studio in my home.

Larry Hanratty: I have 30 years experience as a welder and metal worker. I have a large shop with a welder where I keep busy with many projects.

We have been married for 25 years. Larry has always been willing to help with my art endeavors. His welding skills come into play often and he is good at helping to finds ways to make my ideas work. We had 2 large Sculptures in the Sioux Falls Sculpture walk this last year.

I had been intrigued with public art since I heard about the 'Chicago Cows'. I was amazed by the interest created and the imagination of the artists. I have since participated in two other public art projects in Grand Forks, ND and Buffalo, MN. I was glad to hear the Lake Agassiz Arts Council planned to have the "Herd about The Prairie" bison and to get the opportunity to recreate a bison for our community.

Many ideas were sketched out before deciding on the "Bison Pull Toy." It was chosen for its humor and nostalgia, hopefully appealing to all ages.

It was a learning experience working on the bison. I wasn't sure how we would put it together. After finding the right parts, applying fiberglass, a little improvising and a lot of sanding, it all came together with the paint.
