••••• Clara has named her bison Mooney Blue. Great Northern Pacific railway bridges and Old Glory are depicted on either side.••••• Clara has her Bachelors of Science degree in Art from Minot State University. She has always loved to create art. She started drawing as a country school student near Benedict, North Dakota, and has kept that her mainstay even as she progressed over time through the oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints. Clara has been an Art Instructor for 24 years and has always kept busy doing her own personal art. She has participated in the Taube Art Show and the Baga Art Show in Minot and the Roughrider Art Show in Williston. She has also won a Governor's Award in Bismarck. Her buffalo is the third large animal she has painted, the other two were horses for Easter Seals of Minot and Bismarck. "A bison, now that's a new challenge after painting a Quarter horse and an Arabian. When I first laid eyes on the bison I thought, "Oh my gosh, he is huge!" At first I felt overwhelmed, and wondered if my original idea fit. Well, I regrouped, researched, and then hit the ground running (painting) with a feeling of new confidence, relishing in the challenge. Including our flag, Old Glory, is a must for me, and adding bridges that thumbprint the area I am depicting add a special touch to make the animal unique to this area. These bridges are Old Northern Pacific bridges that crossed the Red River in the early 1900s. One has a push engine on it moving box cars in flood stage. The bridge scenes are in the moonlight to add to the mysticism of the antique crossings. The photos I used as reference were forwarded to me by NDSU Archivist, John E. Bye. This bison was painted as a tribute to my sister Shirley Huzinga who passed away in the Fall of 2005. She was a retired math teacher in San Francisco. Working on this huge project has been very healing for me.
