West to Dakota

West to Dakota

•••••

The theme for "West to Dakota" is based on Jan's ancestors' journey to Dakota in 1889. The paintings on the buffalo depict actual incidents remembered by Johansen's great aunt - age 7 at the time of the journey. Though personal, the journey would be typical for thousands of immigrants who settled in what is now North Dakota.

Accomplished in many mediums, Johansen presently prefers oils and acrylics in interpreting the landscape, figure and still life. She works in both traditional and contemporary styles. Johansen is a signature member of the Pastel Society or America and Transparent Watercolor Society of America and has been accepted in numerous national shows such as: Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of America, Pastel Society of America, Watercolor West, International Association of Pastel Societies as well as the CM Russell Art Auction where she has been an invited "quick draw" artist. Her work has been published in "International Artist Magazine" and "International Pastel Artist Magazine."

Having already painted two buffalo (benefits for CM Russell Museum, Great Falls MT, and The Buffalo Rodeo, Buffalo MN) Johansen was familiar with the challenge. The fact that Devils Lake ND is her hometown and that she taught 2nd grade in Wahpeton ND before moving to Minnesota, put the "Herd About the Prairie" project closer to her heart.  The final deciding factor was her inspiration of the theme - immigrants to North Dakota in the late 1800s", basing it on her ancestors journey to  Dakota in 1889. Johansen named her buffalo "West to Dakota" (Dakota for short).  The paintings on the buffalo depict actual incidents remembered by Johansen's great aunt - age 7 at the time of the journey. Though personal, the journey would be typical for thousands of immigrants who settled in what is now North Dakota.  Dakota will come with a written account of the journey as well as photos of his birth.
