Mica Star Boy: Spirit of the Cave

Mica Star Boy: Spirit of the Cave

•••••

Jill Johnson-Danielson's bison utilizes the color palette of the cave paintings at Lascaux, France. The bison is painted to resemble the sandstone or limestone walls where cave paintings are found. The form is then turned into a mosaic using tiles individually handcut from mica.

The early Hopewell people in the US formed spiritual symbols such as handprints out of mica 10,000 years ago. Mica dates to the paleolithic era and is formed under such extreme pressure that the plates which comprise mica are forced straight up in vertical veins. Today, mica is used in a number of industries including in the manufacture of certain types of computer chips.
