••••• Kurkowski’s bison features falling maple leaves against a blue sky.••••• Robert E. Kurkowski was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, and raised largely in Fargo. After serving in the U. S. Navy, he received his degree in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota, Morris and then returned to the Fargo area. He worked for the Fargo Public Schools, helping to found the award winning Creative Arts Studio. He retired from his position as the Director of the Creative Arts Studio in the spring of 2003 and since then has concentrated his efforts in his own studio, Marbakka Studios, near Christine, North Dakota, where he creates raku and stoneware ceramics and sculpture. I am president of the FM Visual Artists which supports this project and I serve on the steering committee of the Herd about.... For these reasons alone I felt I should apply to decorate the form. The work itself took much longer than anticipated and I was reminded once again of why I like 3-D work rather than painting someone else's form. I chose the concept of maple leaves because, as I was sitting on my deck and thinking of what to do with the form, I was enveloped by a swirl of maple leaves. I thought, "Well, that would be interesting." Most people who have seen the work while I had it in my studio thought it looked bright and interesting. This is not a profound work of art, just a fun little thing to decorate the street.
