••••• Lunde’s bison is a whimsical hybrid of a buffalo and a tiger.••••• I was born in Fargo and have lived here all my life. I began drawing at the age of four, and pursued my love of art throughout my childhood. I graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead with a B.A. In fine art in 1983 and have worked in the graphic arts field for the past 22 years. I am currently employed as a graphic artist at Swanson Health Products. In addition to my primary career as a graphic designer, I have been a free-lance illustrator, cartoonist and caricaturist, and have had my work published in a number of newspapers, magazines, and books. Much of my art work these days involves digital design, but my true love remains putting pencil to paper, or in this case, paintbrush to bison. When I learned that this project welcomed artists other than sculptors, my initial reservation disappeared. When I saw for myself the size of the subject matter, I was a bit intimidated at first, but welcomed the challenge of trying to make something memorable. I chose the tiger/buffalo concept because I thought the combination of the cat's distinctive markings with the bison's bulk and stature would make a striking hybrid, capturing noble qualities of both animals while also injecting a note of humor. As a child, while other kids drew horses, I sketched lions and tigers constantly. That fascination with charismatic animals has remained, and the tiger's bold markings stretched onto the bison's powerful shape was an irresistible idea for me. Also, the bison is emblematic of a species brought back from the edge of extinction, and now the tiger faces the same fate the bison did a century ago. I feel this binds the two creatures together in a way. I have loved painting Tigalo, and as I reach the end of the process, I'm finding it hard to say, "OK, done!" I think that's the sign of a truly enjoyable project.
