••••• Mastrud describes his bison’s painting as an organic landscape.••••• Nathan Mastrud was born in Grand Forks in 1976 and grew up in Fargo. He has always been artistically inclined throughout his life. Nathan graduated in 2002 from MSUM with a BA in fine art painting but also enjoys glassblowing, sculptural forms and found-object art. He can go from landscape paintings to abstract to low-brow monster forms. Whether the art project is commisioned or for personal exploration there is always numerous pieces in the works at his Fargo studio. Upon hearing the chance to design a three-quarter scale buffalo I knew I could not pass up this opportunity. There was a time when I wondered what I was getting into but I knew it was worth loosing my parking spot in the garage for a few months. The design was conceived from numerous nights along the river banks watching the sunset rest along the water, trees, roots and land. These river banks always show a rich texture, history and exactly how colorful of region we all live in. This area of the valley is very much alive and turns on each and every night. Through this fluid painting on the buffalo I have heard all different forms of reaction from,"you're painting what in your garage?," to "I have to come and see; I have heard so much about this project!" Personally I have enjoyed the "Herd About the Prairie" project to the fullest and I am looking forward to seeing all the bison together in the end.
